Flag Requests
As a service to Marylanders, Senator Angela Alsobrooks can arrange to have an American flag flown over the United States Capitol to commemorate a special occasion or honor an individual or organization.
Flags are flown on special flag poles, and after being flown, each flag is issued a keepsake Certificate of Authenticity by the Architect of the Capitol.
There are two flag options for you to choose from when purchasing a flag flown over the Capitol: pre-flown and date-specific flags
- Pre-flown flags are accompanied by a certificate from the Architect of the Capitol as a record of the event.
- Date specific flags include a customizable certificate from our office in addition to the standard certificate and you can elect to have the flag flown on a specific date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I select a specific date for my flag to be flown over the Capitol?
This is most likely because you have selected a pre-flown flag from the dropdown menu. Pre-flown flags have already been flown over the Capitol and are available for constituents who do not have a specific date they want their flag flown. To select a specific date, select a regular flag from the dropdown menu and the form will then prompt you for a specific date.
How long does it take to receive the flag?
We cannot guarantee a return date for flags requested through our office, but flags are normally delivered 4-6 weeks after the requested fly date. For requests with no specified date, flags are normally delivered within 4-5 weeks after the request has been received by our office. Please submit flag requests at least six weeks in advance of the intended fly date.
What is the difference between the “Flown For” and “Occasion” fields on the order form?
The “Flown For” field is for the name of the person that the flag is being flown in honor of. The text entered here will appear as the name on the certificate that will accompany the flag. Because of this, please limit the number of characters in the field to a maximum of 35. The “Occasion” field is why the person is having a flag flown for them. Some common examples are “Achievement of the Rank of Eagle Scout,” “Completion of the Gold Award,” “Celebration of their 60th Birthday,” “Retirement from the United States Air Force,” “Graduation from the University of Illinois,” etc.
Can I pay by check and pick-up my flag?
All flags must be mailed. We can only accept requests that are made and paid for online through Pay.gov. This is a payment process that is run by the U.S. Treasury Department. On the website, you may select the type of flag you wish to purchase using a variety of electronic payment methods. Prices vary from $16 – $39 depending on flag type and size.
