WASHINGTON, DC – Tonight, Senator Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.) voted for Joint Resolutions of Disapproval, S.J.Res 34 and S.J.Res.41, to block sales of 1,000 pound bombs and automatic rifles to Israel in light of the devastating humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Earlier this week Senator Alsobrooks joined more than 40 Senate Democrats in calling for a large-scale expansion of humanitarian aid in Gaza and to resume all diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire and end the war.

Senator Alsobrooks released the following statement:

“There are moments in history where our silence will not only be remembered — it will be judged.

“Tonight, as the humanitarian crisis continues to worsen in Gaza, I voted to support two Joint Resolutions of Disapproval to block the sale of arms to Israel.

“I joined the voices of so many who feel the moral imperative to demand change. To witness the inhumanity of starving children and say nothing is not just a dereliction of duty but of conscience.

“Netanyahu and his government must immediately change course. I remain committed to the U.S.-Israel relationship and my belief that the people of Israel have a right to defend themselves.

“In this moment, we must all do everything in our power as a global community to get desperately needed aid to the people of Gaza.

“And the task before us all is to work towards a permanent ceasefire, a return of the hostages to their families, and a durable peace in the region.”

Senator Alsobrooks also signed a letter to Secretary Rubio expressing grave concerns and demanding answers about the U.S’s role in and financial support for the troubled Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), and the worsening conditions on the ground. The lawmakers demanded that Secretary Rubio immediately cease all U.S. funding for GHF and resume support for the existing UN-led aid coordination mechanisms in Gaza with enhanced oversight to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches civilians in need.
