Senator Alsobrooks to transportation officials: “Is it normal for the Federal Highway Administration to abruptly halt a bridge project in the middle of construction just because there was a change in administration?”

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Senator Alsobrooks (D-Md.), member of the Committee on Environment and Public Works, questioned transportation officials about the dangers of withholding transportation funding.

“Unfortunately, as some of my colleagues have already mentioned, this administration is making [passing bipartisan legislation] very difficult. It’s hard to have a conversation about developing the next bipartisan infrastructure law when we discover that [the Administration] is refusing to implement the current existing law. Due to this Administration’s funding pause, Maryland’s Department of Transportation has $330 million in federal funding that is currently on hold. And these are grants that have already been awarded and dollars that Congress has appropriated,” said Alsobrooks.

Alsobrooks continued, “Now the reality is this Administration is not actually concerned about efficiencies. The Department of Transportation is adding an unnecessary layer of review for STIP amendments at the same time that it’s slashing our federal workforce, the very civil servants who could help get projects on the ground in our states faster.”
