WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the GENIUS Act, of which Senator Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.) was an original cosponsor and key negotiator, became law. The GENIUS Act passed the Senate by a vote of 68-30 and the House by a vote of 308-122.

“Today is a historic day. For the first time, the U.S. has a regulatory framework for digital assets. The GENIUS Act creates clear rules of the road for stablecoins, which can provide quicker and cheaper payment systems for more people and businesses. After cosponsoring the original version of the bill, I negotiated key priorities into the final version that became law, including language preserving state consumer protection laws and language protecting community banks. GENIUS is an important first step as we seek comprehensive rules of the road for the broader digital assets industry.

“As more Marylanders and Americans participate in this emerging market and the public continues to engage with a rapidly growing industry, we as lawmakers must meet the moment in encouraging innovation; providing regulatory certainty; and bolstering consumer protections. My priorities throughout this process have been ensuring that innovation stays in America and making sure this multi-billion dollar emerging market remains fair, competitive, and accessible for all Americans.”
