WASHINGTON, DC – Senator Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.) questioned Nominee for Surgeon General, Dr. Casey Means. In her questioning, Senator Alsobrooks asked about products Dr. Casey Means advertised – and received compensation for – in her newsletter. Even just a basic search finds that these products contain lead, Cadmium, and other carcinogens and reproductive toxins.

“You are railing out against pharmaceutical companies you say are advertising these products that mislead the public and yet you have received compensation from companies, you have promoted them in your newsletter, and you are doing the same thing the pharmaceutical companies are doing by advertising and influencing people for these products that have been deemed to be unsafe for the public,” said Senator Alsobrooks.

Examples mentioned in the questioning:

  1. Dr. Means’ newsletter #35 was sponsored by ENERGYbits. She writes “What other food is so effortless and so nourishing for $1.00 a day? [They’re] great for the entire family—pets love them too!]”

The Better Business Bureau found that the company failed to provide substantiation for health-related and environmental claims and recommended it discontinue doing so. ENERGYbits was served notice under CA Prop 65 law, alleging their products contained lead above allowable levels.

  1. Dr. Means’ newsletter #33 was sponsored by Pique.

Pique was served notice under California’s Proposition 65, for containing and failing to disclose that lead was in their products—a carcinogen and reproductive toxin.
