WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Senator Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.) made the following statement after the announcement that Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-Md.-05) would retire from Congress at the end of his term.

“To summarize the legacy of accomplishments that Congressman Steny Hoyer achieved would require an entire novel — his impact on the people of Maryland’s fifth district — and people across this nation — over his storied career is as profound as it is enduring. He is the consummate statesman. A political tactician of the first order. A savvy policymaker. And, most importantly, a man who put service to the people above all else. I know I join the entire state of Maryland when I say ‘Thank you for a lifetime of service.’

“I do not exaggerate when I say Congressman Steny Hoyer changed my life. It was Steny who first planted the seed in my mind that I could run for federal office. It was Steny who told me, ‘Any ballot you put your name on, I will be right there with you.’ And for those of you who know Steny, you know the weight his name carries in our state. When Steny is on your team, you win. I know that firsthand, and I know his constituents do as well.

“Like many, I am sad to see a dear friend and colleague leave these halls. I learned – and I know all of Team Maryland did as well – so much from Congressman Hoyer. But I’m also so excited for him to get the break he deserves and spend time with his wonderful wife, Elaine. He leaves Congress with his head held high, secure in the knowledge that he has made so many Marylanders’ lives better. I know because I am one of those Marylanders.”
