The U-FIGHT Act will expand access to early screening, detection, and intervention methods for those diagnosed with uterine fibroids

July 30, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC — As reported in The Hill, Senator Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.) and Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-Wy.) introduced the bipartisan Uterine Fibroid Intervention and Gynecological Health Treatment (U-FIGHT) Act. This legislation would expand access to early screening, detection, and intervention methods for individuals diagnosed with uterine fibroids. Congresswoman Shontel Brown (OH-11) introduced the U-FIGHT Act in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“For too long, uterine fibroids have plagued women. We need to invest in research, raise public awareness, and develop programs for early treatment. No woman should have to suffer in silence,” said Senator Alsobrooks.

“We only now as a country direct about 0.03% of all of our research dollars to fibroids,” continued Alsobrooks. “Remember, again, this is a physically painful issue that affects close to 80% of all of the women in our country. And yet only 0.03% of research dollars is directed to this issue. It is time that changes. I’m so proud to work with my colleague Senator Lummis on this pressing issue that impacts women and families across this country, no matter their politics.”

“I am proud to reach across the aisle and partner with Senator Alsobrooks to ensure women in Wyoming and across the country suffering from uterine fibroids no longer suffer in silence. Our bipartisan legislation will expand access to screenings and intervention, providing hope to the millions of women who endure this painful condition,” said Senator Lummis.

At the beginning of the month, Senator Alsobrooks met with Academy-award winner Lupita Nyong’o to discuss how they can work together to get the U-FIGHT Act across the finish line and signed into law. Senator Alsobrooks also joined lawmakers and advocates to introduce a package of bills aimed at supporting women with uterine fibroids – including the U-FIGHT Act.
