WASHINGTON (7News) — Angela Alsobrooks was sworn in as Maryland’s newest U.S. senator on Friday, making her the first black woman to represent the state in the Senate.
But Alsobrooks’ moment did not stop there; Vice President Kamala Harris, the first woman to hold the position, issued the oath of office to Alsobrooks and several other newly appointed senators.
Standing next to Alsobrooks was Barbara Mikulski, Maryland’s first-ever female US Senator, who served in that role from 1987 and stepped down in 2017.

Former Prince George’s County, Md. Executive Angela Alsobrooks was sworn into the U.S. Senate on Jan. 3, 2025. (U.S. Senate)
Alsobrooks was elected during the Nov. 5, 2024, general elections, beating out Republican opponent and former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan for the seat. She was serving as Executive of Prince George’s County, stepping down in late 2024.
Alsobrooks’ name was the first to be called due to alphabetical order, meaning she was also the first person to sign their oath for office.
