LARGO, Md. (7News) — Maryland’s new Senator, Angela Alsobrooks, recently returned to familiar ground, participating in a groundbreaking event outside the building where she once served as Prince George’s County executive.

After six years as county executive and eight years as state’s attorney, Alsobrooks campaigned as fully prepared to be a United States senator. However, a few months into the job, she admits to encountering some surprises and challenges.

“I can tell you one of the really pleasing things about being in the senate is it’s very collegial,” Alsobrooks said. “I have found that it is possible to make friendships on both sides of the aisle that there are many things we share in common.”

Despite being a Democrat in a Republican-controlled senate, Alsobrooks expressed her concerns about the current administration.

“I am really concerned about the impact on Marylanders from the chaos we’ve seen from this administration,” she said. “I have been concerned and angry, to be honest with you.”

Coming from a county where Democrats hold an overwhelming majority, Alsobrooks noted that this is a new experience for her. However, she remains undeterred, crediting her teenage daughter for offering perspective.

“She said you’re lucky to go to a place where people don’t always agree with you, but you get to hear why,” Alsobrooks said. “It’s been an interesting experience for me.”

Alsobrooks has used her committee positions to question Trump administration nominees and aims to persuade her new friends across the aisle to see things differently, though she acknowledges limited success so far. She remains committed to seeking common ground, guided by advice from her father.

“My father told me how you see something depends on where you sit,” she said. “Some of us have come from other parts of the country, and we see it a little different.”
